I've got a lot of pics to show, so I'll probably be adding to this as I go.

First and foremost, this is my first 40K army. I mostly got into 40K because I was having a really tough time keeping a D&D group together, and a lot of my friends played this game. With 40K, we didn't have to worry about a continuing story, or aligning 6 people's schedules all at once to be able to play.

When I committed myself to buying an army, I chose the Necrons because I a) really like the undead, because they're creepy, and b) really liked the glowing green rods that most of them got. It set them apart stylistically from the rest of the 40K armies.

Style was a big selling point for me. I'm very much into the game to have fun, paint and convert models, and share a hobby with my friends. I don't view it so much as a game as I do an art project I can play with. I may lose all the time, but I plan on having the sweetest-looking losing army out there!

Preamble aside, let's get down to brass tacks : My army.

First off, I really really really really really really disliked the typical Chainmail Silver army. In fact, I dislike metallic paint in general, as I believe you lose dimension with all the reflections it causes. Unless you're holding the model up close, you lose all the detail. I decided on a dull grey scheme for my guys, but went with purple highlights instead of green as is typical. Purple / Grey with Yellow markings became the basis of my color scheme.

As earlier noted in another thread, I was a little disappointed in the Necrons' apparent lack of pageantry. They all seemed so impersonal, and where I understand that that's kinda the point, it didn't make for a stunning army. Trying to be bland just seemed counter-productive to me, so I took some liberties. If the machines themselves couldn't be customized from a style standpoint, I'd mod them, and base them differently.

One thing I really wanted to do with this army - specifically my warriors - was play up the whole "We'll Be Back" thing. I took 4 or 5 warriors out of each group of 10 and modded them in some way to make them look half-destroyed. I also added little bits here and there that might represent slight modifications or older models with out-of-date technology.

For the paint scheme, white was the color I used to denote seniority of some sort. You'll notice one squad of my warriors is white with red, rather than grey with purple like everyone else. These are my "honor guard" squad, who run with my Necron Lord... one of them, at least. All of my lords have white faces with red stripes as well, denoting themselves as such.

Lastly, I used Chainmail Silver on the joints of all my models as a highlight color... but my Necron Lords get golden joints - again, a symbol of station.

Now, the pics :

First, my warriors -

Here's a close-up of some of my battle-damaged ones:

And a close-up of my Honor Squad:

My Necron Lord (generic, first one, before I vowed to convert them all)

Necron Lord 2 : The Lightning Lord

Necron Lord 3 : The Rocker Lord (I WANNA ROCK!)

My Wraiths (my favorite conversion I did, ever):

Scarabs (check out the before - after scarabs... imp-guard running, imp-guard... not running.)

The Nightbringer:

That's it for now. I have a bunch more, but most aren't painted completely so I don't have many more pictures. I'll try to fix that soon.

Those look great, man. I understand about it being an art project that you can play with. As for your conversions, the additions of imperial bits (flamer backpack and comm pack) look out of place to a purist like me, (still well done, however) but the 'wings' on your second lord I think are a perfect example of adding a little something different to the Necrons while still keeping the visual theme. Great job on that one, and over just great painting. The purple and yellow on the first lord's cape really pops, as do the red and white faces. Overall it's one of the best Necron armies I've ever seen.

Awesome, some of the nicest necrons I've ever seen. You do a great job of bringing character to models that traditionally lack it.

Nothing wrong with the way your armies look on the table Joe. I plan to do more painting than gaming on Chapter nights. Its a great way to learn something new about painting and modeling.

The thing I really love about this army is that it breathes life into the inanimate. The amount of detail and character put into his little automitons is fantastic and tells a story really well... heck you made scarabs entertaining Civ...

I often thought that the best conversions are those that pay homage to the form and function of the structure of their creation. purpose breeds believability. Smile

Great work! now I can't wait to see what happens with the flayed ones!
